The Living Rainforest

On March 05, 2010 in Entertaining Greenbie, Travel, Visit Green Britain

flowerWe here a lot about the Rainforest and its destruction, we see pictures in the news, but how many of us can really imagine what a Rainforest is like and why it’s destruction is so devastating to the planet?

Tropical Rainforests are thought to contain around 50% of all the Earth’s species of plants and animals, though they cover only about 6% of the land surface. (8,000 years ago, they covered about double the current area.) Rainforests are a priceless and economically vital source of food and medicine, wood and water, building and craft materials and much, much more.

Rainforests also play a vital role in the planet’s water and carbon cycles and in regulating climate. Yet today, rainforest destruction releases more CO2 than all the world’s cars, planes and ships put together. Earth systems scientists like James Lovelock believe that rainforest conservation is vital to stabilising CO2 emissions and combating dangerous climate change.

You can visit and experience a real Rainforest in the UK. The Living Rainforest is a live, growing rainforest under glass in Newbury, Berkshire. Run by a non-profit charity, it’s one of the first such projects in Europe and brings together animals and plants, using them to educate children and adults about humanity’s impact on the environment.

At The Living Rainforest you’ll find yourself immersed in real rainforest experiences. You can walk through the live rainforests, which grow under 20,000 sq ft of glass, looking out for butterflies and live lizards which roam around freely.

The Living Rainforest is operated and run by the Trust for Sustainable Living. The mission of the Trust is to further the understanding of sustainable living in the UK and abroad through high-quality education.

Part-Time Carnivore Launches

On March 04, 2010 in Entertaining Greenbie, Environment, Food, Interactive Greenbie, Pledge, Serious Greenbie

ptA fantastic new website launched onto the world wide web on the 2nd March allowing users to pledge their commitment to being a part time carnivore. Part-Time Carnivore [www.parttimecarnivore.org] was an idea conceived by Pete Davis who says “Whilst I respect vegetarians, I think it is ludicrous to expect everyone to give-up meat overnight. I hope Part-Time Carnivore will show people that they can make a difference and still enjoy the odd bacon sandwich.”

It is well held belief by many, backed up by statistics provided by the FAO that the carbon emissions produced in the production of meat including the emissions of methane from cattle, sheep, and pigs is of a significant amount. Part-Time Carnivore aims to help reduce these emissions by encouraging people to eat less meat therefore reducing the demand and production which will in turn reduce the emissions.

Log on to Part-Time Carnivore and pledge to change your diet. See how much land and CO2 you have saved on a weekly basis by subscribing to one of the six Part Time Carnivore options. You can opt for Meat Free Mondays, inspired by Paul McCartney, Vegging Out by only choosing veggie options when eating out, and Meaty Sunday’s where you opt to just eat meat on a Sunday. Take a look at the six options and see what type of Part-Time Carnivore you could be.

You can also take part in quick quizzes and read recent news articles from the press. Interact with Part-Time Carnivore by joining their fan group on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter, or even subscribe to their You Tube content.

Ekologisk frukost

On March 02, 2010 in Entertaining Greenbie, Food

Basblandning-dinkel_01Saltå Kvarn i Järna säljer ekologisk müsli.
